FREDERICKSBURG, VA—The start of a new school year brings changes to families across the country, and STEP VA Inc., the local 501(c)3 nonprofit that empowers people with disabilities and their families through creative expression and sensory exploration is no exception.

The organization recently named Megan Colón as its new program coordinator. Stepping into the role that was established by and for Sarah Garner, Colón, who has been teaching Yoga classes and workshops for the organization for almost a dozen years, is ready for the next step and the challenges that come with being the role.
“I'm excited for this new opportunity with STEP VA—to help our programs expand, continue to serve our community, and to give Sarah the time to focus on her family and the teaching roles that she loves,” she said.
Garner is stepping back from the role of program coordinator to focus on her family. She remains involved with STEP VA, continuing to serve as a choir director of the All Abilities Choir, as well as the music director for the spring musical experience that has become a staple of STEP VA programming.

“It’s been an honor to be a part of STEP VA these past 10 years; starting as a volunteer and transitioning to the role of Program Coordinator these last 4½ years to build up our programs and offerings,” Garner said.
“I’m looking forward to continue to use my creativity in the classroom and rehearsals with our students, and I look forward to seeing STEP VA continue to grow. Thank you STEP VA for giving me the opportunity to bloom these last few years. I’ll still be around singing!”
The All Abilities Choir will have its first performance this weekend at the dRC Fall Family Festival, and launch the 2025-26 season at the organization's Annual Gala on Friday, September 26.
“STEPVA is so grateful for Sarah’s passion for our programs while being a strong advocate for our participants abilities. Thank for your initiative in creating year round programming. We want to welcome Megan to our team. We are excited to further develop our programming in tandem with our families under her leadership,” said Jan Monroe, STEP VA executive director.
