Fredericksburg, Virginia—Ticket sales for STEP VA Inc.'s stage performance of Disney/Pixar's “Finding Nemo” begin tomorrow, March 1.
Five years ago, in a bid to work through his feelings about the COVID-19 pandemic, local thespian and musician Noah Finch wrote a musical about his experience as an autistic person. Backed by STEP VA Inc., the local 501(c)3 nonprofit that empowers people with disabilities and their families through creative expression and sensory exploration, Finch—a longtime participant in the organization—cast his friends to play the various roles and brought the story to the stage. At the cast party after the last show, one of the cast members turned to STEP VA's executive director, Jan Monroe, and asked what musical the organization would be performing the following year. With that question, the STEP VA Spring Musical Experience was born.
“A Special COVID-19,” Finch's show, saw a cast of 12 actors, three crew members, and an audience cap of 100 people per show. In just about six weeks, 46 cast members and six crew members, all with at least one disability, will bring Disney/Pixar's “Finding Nemo Jr.” to the stage at Courtland High School; and they'll be performing for an audience up to 500 people per show.
Along with a bigger cast, crew, and ticketing capacity, the show on Saturday, April 12, will also have American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting available for audience members.
